Mary Starkebaum, MD, specializing in Internal Medicine

Mary Starkebaum, MD

I would like this office to be your medical "home base," where we address your medical concerns promptly, help coordinate your care with other practitioners, and where you will feel both cared about, and cared for.

As a Board Certified internist, I do "primary care" for adults of all ages. This includes both preventive care and managing complex illnesses, gentle "Pap smears" and gentle geriatric care. I take my own "call" nights and weekends, to be readily available to you. I admit my patients to Northwest Hospital, and follow them there. I speak some Spanish, and some German. I have been caring for men with HIV/AIDS for 20 years. The art work in the waiting room and hall was created by these patients and others.

It is important for you to be an active participant in your care. So I try to give you explanations as well as recommendations. I will generally dictate your progress notes in front of you, for your review, and to verify that I got the story straight. I am sympathetic with alternative treatment modalities. I recognize the challenge of good self care. I consider the interaction between our medical conditions and the rest of our lives.

My undergraduate, medical school and residency training were all at the University of Washington in Seattle. I have been practicing at the Greenlake office since 1995.

Prevent Shingles! The Zostavax immunization, recommended for people over 60, reduces the risk of shingles by half, and the severity by half. Covered by Medicare Part D. Not helpful if you have already had shingles.
